LITS will be responsible for posting content to the majority of the digital signs in the building. The Media Specialist will be responsible for the content posted to the digital sign outside of the Digital Media Lab.

Library & Gallery employees should submit requests for Digital Sign content through the Library-Web queue in RT (email Library-Web@rt.umbc.edu). Requests should be as specific as possible and include the exact wording desired for the signs and any graphics or logos should be included with the request. All signs should adhere to the Style Guideline for Library Digital Signs and be relevant to our community with an emphasis on library content. If assistance in developing graphics is required, please submit the request as early as possible and no less than fourteen business days prior to the date the sign should post.

Signs will be reviewed for relevance to library users and adherence to the UMBC Style and Brand Guide and the Style Guideline for Library Digital Signs. If there are any issues or questions, someone from LITS will contact the requester for clarification or to request changes.

LITS (or the Media Specialist for the DML sign) will post the signs and make any adjustments as necessary to ensure that the content appears as intended on displays. Requests should be submitted at least seven business days prior to the date the signs should be posted. Requests for assistance with graphics should be submitted at least fourteen business days prior to the date it should post.

Library & Gallery content will take precedence. Requests from external groups will be reviewed for interest to UMBC students, faculty, and staff. Signs from outside groups must be submitted in completed form as an image file (gif, png, jpg) in the correct aspect ratio (16:9) and scalable to the size of the primary display (1920x1080). Videos without audio can be submitted as WEBM, MP4, or MOV files and should be no longer than 30 seconds in duration. Requests must specify which display(s) they would like to be posted on. All designs should adhere to the Style Guideline for Library Digital Signs.

Signs will be reviewed for relevance to library users and completeness of request. If there are any issues or questions, someone from LITS will contact the requester for clarification or to request changes.

All outside submissions of signs should be sent to Library-Web@rt.umbc.edu at least seven business days prior to the date the sign needs to be posted. If approved, LITS (or the Media Specialist for the DML sign) will post the signs on the specified displays.

Currently, Fortran compilers vary widely in their support of Fortran 2003 and Fortran 2008. This limits portability. The Fortran committees have responded by proposing that only very modest features be added for Fortran 1x. The work list is now open for suggestions. Also, the Fortran committees have written an annex for TS 24772, "Guidance to Avoiding Vulnerabilities in Programming Languages through Language Selection and Use". This is intended to be useful as a starting point for development of coding standards.

Though it is not necessarily the view taken by those who design them, modern computers are deterministic nonlinear dynamical systems, and it is both interesting and useful to treat them as such. In this talk, I will describe a nonlinear dynamics-based framework for modeling computer systems.

Elizabeth Bradley did her undergraduate and graduate work at MIT, interrupted by a one-year leave of absence to row in the 1988 Olympic Games, and has been with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder since January of 1993. Her research interests include nonlinear dynamics, artificial intelligence, and control theory. She is the recipient of a NSF National Young Investigator award, a Packard Fellowship, a Radcliffe Fellowship, and the 1999 student-voted University of Colorado College of Engineering teaching award.

Traditional collections on the Java platform focused on providing thread-safety at the expense of performance or scalability. More modern data structures strive to provide performance without compromising thread-safety. Some of them require you to adopt to a different semantics or programming model. In this presentation we will explore some data structures that can help reach both thread-safety and reasonable performance. Concurrent collections, immutable collections, operations on and performance of lists, blocking queues, and tries.

Juju is a new and opensource part of Ubuntu Server that simplifies the deployment of user-defined service stacks over their entire lifecycle to both cloud and "bare metal" providers. Services are defined by charms; there are currently over 90 open source charms in the charm store and more are under development. So we have Cassandra, Ceph, CloudFoundy, CouchBase, CouchDB, and those are just the notable charms starting with "C", see for more.

Jim Baker works at Canonical as a software engineer on the Ubuntu Server team to support cloud computing, specifically through Juju and its ecosystem. Prior to joining the server team, he was part of the Emerging Technology Group at Canonical that created Juju. Jim is also a lead developer of the Jython implementation. Jim is a graduate of Harvard College and Brown University and is a nominated member of the Python Software Foundation.

Bruce Long began his undergraduate studies in computer science, winning ACM competitions and other awards. Bruce rapidly realized that getting computers to really understand information about the world required a new way of thinking about the world. He ended up completing a BA and an MA in philosophy, studying the structures of logic, language, and how they convey meaning about reality. He then enrolled in a PhD program in theoretical computer science at the University of Westminster in London. 041b061a72
